HARVARD'S INSTITUTE OF POLITICS ANNOUNCES SPRING FELLOWS

Cambridge, MA – Harvard's Institute of Politics, located at the John F. Kennedy School of Government, today announced the selection of an experienced group of individuals for Resident and Visiting Fellowships this spring.  Over the course of an academic semester, Resident Fellows interact with students, participate in the intellectual life of the Harvard community and lead weekly study groups on a wide variety of issue areas.  Visiting Fellows join the Institute for a shorter period and maximize their time meeting with students, faculty and Harvard research center staff.

"We are looking forward to welcoming our spring 2012 Fellows to Harvard," said Harvard's Institute of Politics Director Trey Grayson. "Their public service experience throughout local, state and federal government and in journalism and international politics should create strong interest among students, faculty and the entire University community."

The following Resident Fellows will join the Institute for the spring semester and lead weekly study groups on a range of topics:

  • Farai Chideya, author, online journalist and host, National Public Radio's News and Notes program (2006-09)
  • Artur Davis, U.S. representative (AL-7, D; 2003–11)
  • Margaret McKenna, president, Walmart Foundation (2007–11); president of Lesley University (1985-2007); former deputy under secretary of education and deputy White House counsel to President Jimmy Carter
  • George Nethercutt, U.S. representative (WA-5, R; 1995–2005)
  • Steven Schrage, former chief of staff, U.S. senator Scott Brown (R-MA); 2008 foreign policy and trade director, Romney for President campaign; former senior State Department, White House/USTR and G8 official
  • Ted Strickland, governor of Ohio (2007–11); U.S. representative (OH-6, D; 1993–95 and 1997–2007)
  • Kathy Taylor, mayor of Tulsa, OK (2006–09); Oklahoma secretary of commerce (2003–06)

In addition, the Institute is pleased to host Wael Nawara, Egyptian writer and politician, co-founder and former secretary general of Egypt's El Ghad Party (2005-11), as a Visiting Fellow Feb. 13-March 9.  Visiting Fellows traditionally meet with student groups; lead discussion groups on topical issues and share their experiences in public and political service; and participate in public policy classes with students and Harvard University faculty.

The Fellows program is central to the Institute's dual commitment to encourage student interest in public life and to increase interaction between the academic and political communities.
