There is a total, hopefully temporary, collapse of security in Tunis following Ben Ali fleeing out of the country. Reports of fires in the main station and Carrefour and wide incidents of theft in other parts of the capital despite a curfew that was imposed starting from 6 p.m. Residents are carrying knives and collectively defending neighborhoods against mob attacks.
It is not clear why the Army has not stepped in to restore law and order. The Army may be waiting for things to get bad so that when it starts to impose harsh discipline people may be willing to accept and tolerate hard measures.
On the other hand, the link below suggests that the Police is releasing convicted felons to loot shops and homes to mislead the public opinion with news of chaos and looting.
