After 30 Years on Camp David Accords

Will the Mountain Come to Mohamed?

The Egyptian humiliating defeat of 1967 was a hard blow to an era of unrealistic dreams. Unearned dreams, really. An era of Romanticism and seemingly great ideals. Ideals which sadly turned out to be hollow. The 1979 treaty of Camp David between Egypt and Israel put an official end to that era of Romanticism and signified an era of Realism.


The era of Realism recognized that power and military might alone shall reign supreme in our world. With total disregard for justice, legitimacy and other “hollow” ideals. Justice became like a thin shell or a mask. The substance inside is power. And without that internal substance, justice would be easily cracked. It would not stand a chance in the “real” world. Justice is there only to protect the rights of the strong. As for the weak, justice is blocked by lobbies and vetoes. The “weak” is not meant to demand, or even request, justice.


But Realism without Justice, Honor or Vision, led to the events of Sep 11th 2001 and what followed. The irony is that the strong started to use the terms of "International Legitimacy". International Legitimacy became a hard currency. Marred with double standards, past failures and a tall pile of UN SC vetoes, an effective International Justice system was nowhere to be pointed at. The world was just not designed to work in that way.

On Sep 11th 2001, the world entered into a new era, without even realizing what it was. Some called it the “War on Terror” which was more like a “War of Errors”. Errors of diagnosis and judgment. Instead of realizing that military power alone, without justice or legitimacy had given birth to hatred, extremism and terror, therefore shifting focus to designing a new International Justice system to resolve pending conflicts, George W. Bush did the exact opposite, initiating new wars, creating more enemies and fueling more hatred and extremism.


Instead of seeing past Realism to Post-Realism, the Neocons continued the same deadly path towards clash and global conflict as if working towards the old self-fulfilling prophecy of Armageddon. But as Iraq turned ugly, Iran more radicalized, Hezbollah rising in Lebanon and Hamas reaching power in Palestine, the entire world, perhaps except Bush and a few of his supporters had realized the failure of the NeoCons strategy. The old wisdom of “Realism”, that power alone can impose peace or security, even for the strong, turned out to be false. Values like justice, legitimacy and the rule of law, started to regain weight and thickness. This is a terrific opportunity to work towards ending all conflicts. Not with the old idea of negotiations which would still favor the strong, presenting only a temporary solution and a short-lived peace that would sooner or later break as violence and conflict erupt, but through International Justice. Arbitration. International Courts of Justice, existing or to be erected.


Signing the Camp David Accords in 1979 solved a key problem for Egypt, restoring sovereignty over Sinai and ending a quarter-century state of war, which was meant to pave the way for development, prosperity and democratic transformation. But the key problems were not solved by 1979 agreement. The key conflict was about the Palestinians and not about Egypt or Sinai. Israel, and the world, thought that they could do by neutralizing the biggest Arab country, Egypt, through Camp David. That signing a peace treaty between Egypt and Israel will buy security and peace. But that was a mistake. The core problem remained and the conflict worsened.


I do not think that Egypt needs to demand amendments to Camp David Accords. Israel will soon demand such amendments! The peace treaties to come, if and when they come, will automatically impose new game rules and mandatory changes on the Camp David terms. This time the mountain might just come to Mohamed.

My Right to Write

One Day

You Shall NOT Like What I Write

Depending on what you day you meet me, you will either love me or hate me. If you met me on the day when I wrote about religious bullying of little Christian school children in Egyptian schools by none less than their own country’s ministry of education which forces them to study Quran, the Muslim’s holy Book with their Arabic language curriculum, then you will think that I must be Christian or lobbying on behalf of Christians. If you met me the day I wrote about American soldiers in Afghanistan abusing the rules of engagement and proselytizing the Christian faith, then you will think that I am defender of the Islamic faith. If you met me on the day when I coined the idea of Post-Realism and how Israel is pushing the world towards chaotic global confrontation by stalling peace negotiations and trying to bully the Palestinians to accept less and less while Israel delivers nothing and continues to build settlements and confiscate land, then you would think I am totally siding with Palestinians.


Many people meet me and warm up to me thinking that I am really on their side. They befriend me and praise my writings and then a few days later, when I happen to talk about something they do not like, a fall out occurs. I had to put it in my Facebook status: “I promise you that one day you will not like what I write. But I will always say what I think to be right.” It does not mean that I believe that I am always right. I make errors in judgment just like the next guy. But I really try to be objective and that does not seem to suit the general public. Someone gave me a valuable piece of advice. Look at your audience and decide which segment you will suck up to. It is possible in politics to choose your segment and design policies which will maximize your appeal amongst your voters. But when I write, I am not looking for popularity or any one’s approval. I just write what I believe to be right. It is not necessarily your cup of tea, but yet again, you do not have to read what I write.

So, I tell you this in advance to spare you the disappointment. You are most certainly going to dislike what I write one day. But it is OK. We do not always have to agree. We can still be friends while you absolutely hate what I write!

I write, I write and write.

It does not mean that you are wrong or that I am right.

I just write, write and write.

Toxic Assets

TOXIC ASSETS

In all of the US government measures to face the economic crisis, I have not seen an action taken against what seems to be the main reason standing behind the global meltdown; the Credit Default Swaps (CDS). Why haven't the US government or the Fed issued new regulations which would either remove or greatly diminish the size of the CDS market?

In my view, the CDS is a highly toxic instrument which was largely responsible for the global meltdown. The size of CDS market is 60+ trillion dollars while US total GDP is some 13 trillion dollars (20% of the CDS market). This means that any small drop in real-estate prices can result in huge losses in the CDS which largely back mortgages (toxic assets rising), a blow which the United States economy can not withstand or easily absorb because of the huge size of the CDS market. It is just too much exposure with unnecessarily enormous degree of risk. It is like someone who makes $100K a year yet goes to Vegas and gambles with $500K ! Huge leverage which is good if one wins, but is catastrophic when one eventually loses.

Perhaps CDS should only be traded on regulated exchanges directly involving the bond owners themselves as Soros had suggested? I am afraid that the US government is pumping money to only treat symptoms while the roots of the problem remain untackled.

World Heads Towards Chaos

An eventual rift between the new US administration and the right-wing Israeli government may be inevitable. The Obama administration wants to be seen as reclaiming back its right to set the US foreign policy in the White House and the State Department and not in the halls and corridors of AIPAC conventions. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), an American lobbying group, has advocated for pro-Israel policies to the Congress and Executive for more than five decades, often against, many would argue, American interests. Obama delayed his meeting with Netanyahu as not to coincide with AIPAC's gathering in a symbolic gesture that the American agenda is no longer at the mercy of the strong pro-Israel lobby. The lobby which had hi-jacked US foreign policy for decades is slowly being realized as a threat to US interests and indeed, although no one will dare to say that, to World Peace and Global Security at large. When Netanyahu meets Obama on the 18th May, he will have to present an Israeli vision towards peace, if indeed a serious one exists.

It is fair, yet unpopular, to say that the situation in Palestine and Israeli discourse for the past few decades fuels, if it is not directly responsible for, the chaotic situation in Pakistan, Iran, Gaza, Egypt and the developing worldwide clash between the West and Muslims. The West is seen to have blindly supported Israel with no regard to the indigenous people of Palestine, its neighbors and the Arab and Muslim worlds as a whole. With the deteriorating situation in Afghanistan, Pakistan and the bad situation in Iraq & Iran, Obama's administration is racing against time as the world heads towards chaos.

Israel itself faces a very uncertain future if it does not quickly resolve the Palestinian issue. Israeli negotiators have been too smart for Israel’s own interests, as they stalled for decades always demanding more from the defenseless Palestinian side while successive Israeli governments strived to change realities on the ground by building more settlements, erecting apartheid walls, confiscating homes, lands and seizing water resources such that the window for a viable two-state solution now has almost disappeared. The table will turn around soon and Israel will have to give many concessions in land, water, labor arrangements and other resources to resuscitate the dead embryo of a Palestinian State back to vitality.

القوات الأمريكية في أفغانستان

لمحاربة الإرهاب أم للتبشير؟

كشف فيلم بثته الجزيرة عـن أن القساوسة التابعين للجيش الأمريكي في أفغانستان يطلبون من الجنود توزيع الأناجيل المترجمة للغة الباشتو و لغة الداري وأن يجتهدوا في التبشير للمسيح وسط الأفغان. وعلى الرغم من أن التعليمات الميدانية الخاصة بالجيش الأمريكي واضحة وتمنع هذا كلية، فقد ظهر في الفيلم قساوسة برتب عسكرية مختلفة ينصحون الجنود الأمريكيين بإعطاء الهدايا وببث "الكلمة" للأفغان بالتحايل على التعليمات التي تمنع ذلك صراحة. وكانت إحدى كنائس الإيفانجليكان قد قامت بجمع تبرعات لطباعة الأناجيل المترجمة وإرسالها للقوات الأمريكية في أفغانستان. ويظهر أحد الضباط الأمريكيين وهو يحكي عن تجربة مشابهة في العراق ويقول أن العراقيين كانوا "يتحرقون شوقاً وجوعاً" لسماع "كلمة الله". كما يظهر رئيس الأساقفة وهو يقول: "الجنود يطاردون الرجال. نحن أيضاً كمسيحيين نطارد الناس بالمسيح حتى ندخلهم في مملكة الجنة. هذه هي مهمتنا."!

وفور إذاعة الفيلم الذي تم تصويره منذ حوالي عام أعلن البنتاجون أن التقرير يأخذ كلمات القس الكولونيل "جاري هنسلي" رئيس أساقفة البعثة العسكرية خارج السياق، فقامت الجزيرة ببث الفيلم كاملاً دون مونتاج، وقام مخرج الفيلم "برايان هيوز" وهو أمريكي سبق له الخدمة في الجيش الأمريكي بإصدار بيان صحفي أكد فيه أن الفيلم يعبر عن الواقع الذي صوره كما رآه.

البلطجة الدينية

هل تقبل أن يعود ابنك من المدرسة ليقول لك أن المدرس أجبره على حفظ أو قراءة فقرات دينية من دين مغاير لدينه؟

تدريس آيات قرآنية في منهج اللغة العربية إجباراً يعمق الشعور بالبلطجة الدينية التي نعاني منها. البلطجة الدينية هي أن يتمتع أصحاب دين الأغلبية بحقوق تفوق حقوق أصحاب الديانات المغايرة، ويبرطعوا في البلد باعتبارهم أغلبية. هناك فرق كبير بين الديمقراطية، التي تكفل حقوق الأقلية، ودكتاتورية الأغلبية التي يمكن بموجبها أن يقوم النازيون باضطهاد اليهود، أو يقوم اليهود باضطهاد الفلسطينيين، أو يقوم الفرنسيون باضطهاد المسلمين في فرنسا، أو يقوم الديمقراطيون وأنصار أوباما بذبح أتباع الحزب الجمهوري عشية الفوز في الانتخابات، كل هذا بحجة أنه من حق الأغلبية أن تفعل ما تشاء.

البلطجة الدينية هي عكس المواطنة. البلطجة الدينية هي أن يتمتع المسلمون بحق إقامة مسجد في أي بقعة من بقاع أرض الكنانة، وتحت كل عمارة، وفي كل مصلحة حكومية، وفي كل حديقة بالعافية دون رقيب أو حسيب، بينما يضطر المسيحيون لأن يخضعوا لشروط عبثية مثل الخط الهمايوني الصادر من الأستانة، الذي قد يضطرهم طبقاً لمزاج المسئولين لأن يحصلوا على موافقة خطية من السلطان العثماني، خليفة المسلمين، ويا محاسن الصدف عندما نكتشف أن الخليفة قد مات. أما المواطنة، فتعطي نفس الحقوق لكل مواطن بصرف النظر عن دينه أو نوعه أو لونه أو عرقه أو موقعه الجغرافي أو المهني، بصرف النظر عن نسبه وحسبه، بصرف النظر عن ملته ورأيه. الجميع متساوون. هذه هي الضمانة الحقيقية لنا جميعاً في هذا الوطن.

البلطجة الدينية هي التي تجعل المتعصبين - الذين يريدون أن يظهروا الدين الإسلامي على الدين كله بالعافية والعنف، يحرضون البسطاء من أهل القرى والنجوع على مهاجمة إخوتهم وجيرانهم المسيحيين إذا أرادوا أن يقوموا ببناء كنيسة أو توسيعها أو إصلاحها، باعتبار أن بناء معابد الكفار حرام ويجب التصدي له.

البلطجة الدينية هي التي تجعل القتلة والمعتدين في الجرائم "الطائفية" يفلتون من جرائمهم ويختالون في الأرض فخورين بعدوانهم، نتيجة لجلسات الصلح الكاذب وتقبيل اللحى والكلام الفارغ، الذي يهدر الشرعية والقانون ويشجع المتطرفين على استباحة دماء وممتلكات المسيحيين.

البلطجة الدينية تجبر البهائيين من أهل الشورانية في سوهاج على هجر ديارهم بعد الاعتداء المعنوي عليهم من الإعلام الرسمي وغير الرسمي الذي مهد لعدوان أهل القرية المادي عليهم. ماذا كان يحدث إذا خرج رئيس الجمهورية أو رئيس الوزراء أو وزير الداخلية وشجب ما حدث في الشورانية وتوعد المعتدين والمتجاوزين في الإعلام بتطبيق القانون عليهم بكل حسم؟ كنا نبدأ أول خطوة نحو إقامة دولة حقيقية تقوم على المواطنة وسيادة القانون. كنا نتحرك خطوة للأمام نحو التمدن والتحضر. كنا نبتعد خطوات عن البلطجة الدينية. هل هذا كان يضر النظام سياسياً؟ الأكيد أن هذا النظام يجلس في مقاعد الحكم بهراوات قوات الأمن وليس بإرادة الشعب، على الأقل كنا نستخدم قوات الأمن هذه المرة في غرض نبيل، وهو الدفاع عن حقوق مصريين، أقلية نعم، ولكنهم مواطنين مصريين. كنا نستخدم قوات الأمن في الدفاع عن دولة القانون والدستور والقضاء على دولة البلطجة والتجرمة.

هل كان هذا يضر الإسلام؟ بالعكس، فالإسلام يقوى عندما نتحلى بالتسامح ونتخلى عن التعصب، عندما نتيح الخروج منه دون صدام كما نحتفي بالدخول فيه بسلام. لا يمكن أن يكون دخول الإسلام أو أي دين آخر اتجاه واحد أو وان واي، لابد من وجود طريق آمن لمن يريد أن يخرج، لأنه لا مصلحة لنا أن نحبس شخصاً بالنفاق والأونطة في حظيرة دين تركه بالفعل يخرج من قلبه، لأن الإيمان محله القلب، ولا مطلع على القلوب إلا الله سبحانه، وهو وحده الذي يحاسب على النيات. بل أن معاقبة الخارجين عن أي دين إنما تشجع على النفاق والمسايرة بالكذب فتضطرب أحوال المجتمع.

الدول العظيمة والأمم المتقدمة، لم تنل تقدمها دون تضحيات جسيمة، وحروب أهلية، ومئات الآلاف من القتلى والجرحى. نحن نتصور أننا سوف نحصل على الحرية والديمقراطية والتقدم الاقتصادي والاجتماعي والاحترام والكرامة بينما نحن نخشى أن نقول هذا حق وهذا خطأ. نريد أن نحصل على التقدم بينما نتعامى عن الجرائم الطائفية وسياسات البلطجة الدينية واهدار شرعية القانون بحجة "إن البلد ما تستحملش".


أنا لا أدعو لحرب أهلية، لكن دعونا نتذكر أن دخول طالب أسود جامعة ألاباما في الستينات استدعى نزول قوات الحرس الوطني الأمريكي للشوارع لتطبيق القانون الفيدرالي رغم أنف حاكم ألاباما – هذا في الستينات في القرن الماضي. وبعد أربعين سنة من التطور المستمر والكفاح السلمي فاز أمريكي أسود بالرئاسة، هو أوباما. فرحنا نحن جداً بأوباما، لكننا لم نتعلم من التجربة التي أتت به. تلك التجربة بدأت منذ قرن ونصف بحرب أهلية لتحرير العبيد. لا نريد أن نتعب قليلاً حتى نحصل على الخلاص من التخلف والنفاق المجتمعي وإهدار الشرعية في كل مناسبة. والشرعية بالمناسبة لا تتجزأ، ولا تدري نفس متى يقوم أحد حماة الدين من المدعين برفع قضية للحسبة، أو يهاجمك لواء أو مسئول في الشارع ويفلت من العقاب احتماء بمنصبه، فالبلد لا تحتمل غضبة الشرطة أو الجيش، وهناك دائماً تجمع للقوة والبلطجة سوف يمنع تطبيق القانون، سواء كان هذا التجمع دينياً، أو مهنياً، أو قبلياً، ...

المساواة وحرية المعتقد هي أبسط حقوق المواطنة وبناء دولة عظيمة قد يستوجب الكثير من التضحيات لمواجهة أفكار عنصرية وممارسات خارج إطار القانون. من يقول أن البابا شنودة يحفظ القرآن، دليلاً على القبول بتدريس الدين في مناهج اللغة العربية، أقول له أن البابا شنودة حر في ما يحفظه أو لا يحفظه، ومن يريد من المسيحيين أن يدرس القرآن ليقوي لغته العربية خارج المنهج الإجباري فالمكتبات والإنترنت والدروس الخاصة متوفرة للجميع، بل يمكن أن يكون هناك أجزاء اختيارية في المنهج مثل المواد الإضافية التي يمكن لمن يريد أن يحضرها ويستفيد منها وهذا موجود في كل بلاد العالم، ما نتحدث عنه هنا هو المناهج الإجبارية التي يجب أن تخضع لمعايير دقيقة حتى لا تمس حرية المعتقد أو تترك شعوراً لدى "بعض" الدارسين الصغار بأنهم أولاد "الدادة"، بأنهم مواطنون درجة ثانية، بأنهم مستضعفون وعليهم أن يطأطأوا الرءوس في كل مناسبة، لأنهم يعيشون في دولة البلطجة الدينية.

اذا اختار غير المسلمين أن يدرسوا القرآن بارادتهم الحرة فأهلاً ومرحباً بهم، أما اللغة العربية في المدارس فهي مادة إجبارية، لا اختيار فيها ولا يمكن لطالب أن يجتاز مراحل الدراسة دون النجاح فيها، ولا نحتاج لتدريس القرآن في اللغة العربية قسراً لغير المسلمين، وهناك آلاف النصوص وأبيات الشعر وصفحات النثر والكتب غير الدينية التي يمكن أن تؤدي الغرض في تدريس اللغة العربية، ولا يجب أن نفرض القرآن أو أي كتاب ديني آخر على غير أهله.

أفضل طريقة لنعرف كيف يشعر الأخر هو أن نضع أنفسنا مكان هذا الآخر.

هل نقبل أن يعود أبناؤنا من المدرسة ويخبرونا عن مدى ضيقهم بأنهم اضطروا لحفظ أو دراسة فقرات من كتاب مقدس لدين آخر؟

هل نقبل أن نجلس في بيوتنا ونستمع لميكروفونات يتحدث فيها كهنة دين آخر ويصفوننا بأننا كفرة لأننا لا نتبع نفس دينهم؟

هل نقبل أن تقرع أجراس الكنائس حولنا 10 مرات كل يوم ومنها مرتان وقت الفجر؟

الطبيعي ألا نقبل ذلك لأنه أيضاً غير ضروري لأصحاب الدين الآخر بينما هو فيه تعد على مشاعرنا، ومع ذلك فسنجد من يقول لنا هنا، "بل نقبل، وهو شيء عادي" و"أصل مكرم عبيد كان يحفظ القرآن" وهي أمور خارج سياق الموضوع لأن مكرم عبيد في النهاية هو شخص حر في أن يحفظ أو لا يحفظ ما يشاء ما دام يفعل ذلك بإرادته الحرة دون إجبار أو بلطجة من شخص أو دولة أو وزارة.

ابني المسلم يدرس في مدرسة بريطانية في مصر، عاد يوما ما يشكو من أن المدرس البريطاني يتحدث عن الدين بصورة تحرجهم وتؤذي شعورهم الديني.

ابني كان متضايقاً جداً وزملاؤه أيضاً اشتكوا كثيراً من ممارسات هذا المدرس الغريبة وكانت النتيجة هو شكوى جماعية للأهالي من المدرس وفصله من المدرسة – البريطانية.

معلمة أخرى للغة العربية والدين في نفس المدرسة قالت للطلبة في حصة الدين الإسلامي أن المسيحيين كفار ومأواهم النار وبئس المصير، وهذا شيء ضايق ابنتي لأن لها أصدقاءً مسيحيين، وضايقني جداً وتقدمنا بالشكاوى ولكننا لم نستطع أن نفعل شيئاً في ظل البلطجة الدينية. وبالمناسبة لا يوجد في الإسلام أي شيء يجعل أي شخص يتحدث بالنيابة عن الله أو يطلع على حكمه في من يدخل الجنة أو النار مقدماً.


أن نؤيد البلطجة وازدواجية المعايير بحجة ان البلد لا تحتمل أو أننا يجب علينا أن نتحلى بالدبلوماسية تجاه الأغلبية المتعصبة، فهذا شيء لا يناسبني شخصياً وليست مهمتي أن أغمض عيني عن البلطجة سواء من الحاكم أو المحكوم، سواء من الشيخ أو البابا، كما أؤكد أن الأغلبية غير متعصبة، بل أننا عندما نسمح للمتعصبين بالتحريض في الإعلام هنا نعطي المبرر الأخلاقي للآخرين للبلطجة وخرق القانون والاعتداء على الأقلية.

من يقرأ ما أكتبه يتذكر جيداً أنني هاجمت الأنبا توماس عندما قال أن من دخلوا في الإسلام تنازلوا عن هويتهم المصرية، كما هاجمت الكنيسة لأنها لا تسمح بالطلاق المدني وتخلط بين الشق الروحي للزواج والشق المدني، كما هاجمت جلسات "النصح والإرشاد" التي تجبر فيها الشرطة المتحولين عن المسيحية، على العودة إلى أحضان الكنيسة لنصحهم علهم يرجعون عن "ضلالهم"، وهي صورة أخرى من صور الاستتابة التي لا تتفق مع حرية العقيدة، كما هاجمت اللوبي الصهيوني في مصر وفي أمريكا الذي كان يشجع إسرائيل في عدوانها على غزة، وطالبت باتخاذ إجراءات مغايرة في التعامل مع المشاكل الصحية المتعلقة بمزارع الخنازير، فأنا لست متحيزاً لطرف على حساب طرف آخر، ولست معادياً لأحد، ولكنني أنتقد الممارسات التي تتعارض في وجهة نظري مع حرية الاعتقاد أو حقوق الإنسان.

أتمنى أن نستخدم معايير واحدة في التفكير في كل القضايا، والأصعب بالتأكيد أن نستخدم نفس المعايير لننهض في الدفاع عن الآخرين.

أن ننهض للدفاع عن أنفسنا أو أبنائنا عندما يعتدي البعض على حقوقنا فهذا شيء عادي و رد فعل تلقائي وطبيعي.

الاختبار الحقيقي يأتي عندما تنتهك حقوق الآخرين.

فهل ننهض للدفاع عن حقوق الآخرين؟

Forcing non-Muslims to study the Quran in the course of studying the Arabic language, which is a mandatory subject in formal school education is an infringement of a basic right, freedom of faith. For those non-Muslims who voluntarily wish to study Quran to improve their Arabic skills, this can be done in elective subjects or using private means. State-sponsored religious bullying must stop.

ملحوظة: مصر هي الدولة الوحيدة في العالم التي ظهرت فيها الدعوة لإعدام كل الخنازير، ليس الخنازير المصابة أو الخنازير الموجودة بمزارع بها خنازير مصابة أو بالقرب من مزارع بها خنازير مصابة، ولكن كل الخنازير!

أنا مش معترض على نقل المزارع خارج الكتلة السكنية، أو تصحيح أوضاعها الصحية والبيئية، أو التنظيف أو الرعاية الصحية أو الرقابة البيطرية - كل ده واردإنما قتل 300 ألف حيوان بدل نقل المزارع؟ لا يمكن أن أضحك على نفسي وأتجاهل أن المحرك للقرار هو كراهية عميقة لدى الأغلبية لحيوان أصم واحتقار في اللاوعي لمن يأكلونه أو يربونه.

I hate the way these pig farms are operated - have been operated - for decades. The right decision would have always been to relocate to new areas out of the city with improved hygenic conditions and tight medical supervision. However I can NOT fool myself but see this in the context of deeply-rooted hate for the poor animal and negative feelings against those who eat it. Another facet of our religious hysteria.

The recent events in Pakistan force me to contemplate a theoretical question: What happens if Pakistan falls into the hands of Taliban or other extremist factions? This 173-million-people country possesses nuclear capability but the nation is largely divided between seculars and extremists. Taliban raised fears in Pakistan by seizing control of the Buner district close to the capital Islamabad and imposed what they consider as “Sharia’a Law”. Scenes of a public flogging of a 17-year old girl on the hands of Taliban early this month alerted the world to the threat. A Washington Post editorial on Sunday said that the Obama administration’s public warnings of Pakistan’s collapse caused panic. Clinton had used the term “existential threat” describing the situation perhaps to urge the Pakistani government to take action. “In the course of three days, the US secretaries of state and defense, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, and the commanding general of American forces in the Middle East all publicly warned, in blunt and dire language, that Pakistan was facing an existential threat – and that its government and Army were not facing it,” the newspaper said.

President Asif Zardari’s government officials tried to play down the threat. But it seems that they are afraid that massive confrontation could spark off a wide civil war which the Pakistani army maybe unable to win. “The Threat is certainly real,” it said, however, and the Pakistan Army – “untrained in counterinsurgency and rigidly focused on India” – is either “reluctant to take on” the Taliban or “mostly ineffective”. But as Taliban forces expanded from Swat into the adjacent district of Buner, 100 kms from the capital, the United States made clear that it would attack Taliban forces in their Swat valley stronghold unless the Pakistan government stopped the militants’ advance towards Islamabad. But the key to this war is not the army. It is the divided nation of Pakistan. Like most other “Islamic” countries, Pakistan is divided between the modern and the old. Between the moderates and the fanatics. The seculars and the extremists. The key is how to develop a new cultural balance which will allow both to co-exist peacefully, before a de facto civil war erupts in all of these “Islamic” countries.

In 1947 there were only 189 madrassas or Islamic Schools in Pakistan. By 2002 the country had 10,000-13,000 unregistered madrassas with an estimated 1.7 to 1.9 million students. A 2008 estimate puts this figure at "over 40,000". So, these schools have collectively produced millions of Pakistani graduates who were taught in these “Islamic” schools which mostly teach extremist versions of Islam. Many of those “graduates” become radicalizing elements within their local societies. They command respect and influence people around them. Although you may meet many moderate Pakistanis, I have to admit that I was shocked to observe that some Pakistanis have developed some of the most extremist Islamic interpretations present today. Many of these extremist Pakistanis now live in Britain or other European countries where they teach or preach in local mosques and Islamic centers. Many others mingle with the population and spread their message amongst immigrant communities or Muslim minorities often feeling socially or economically excluded in their new societies.


If Pakistan falls, could this event trigger the official start of a formal World War III? I think the War or skirmishes of such had already started some time in 2001. But if Pakistan falls, knowing the situation in Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Gaza, Sudan and Yemen, then we have a very unstable position stretching on a potential battlefront covering many thousands of kilometers. Many other countries, Arab, European and otherwise, have large populations of Muslims ranging from moderates to fanatics. Which side are they going to take? And if more wars are to break out, will this trigger internal stability and radicalization in countries such as Egypt which are still dominated by “Moderates”, such that extremists will take control or gain increasing power? Has the self-fulfilling prophecy of Armageddon finally come to fateful realization? Extremists on both sides have the Armageddon “promise” in their mythology. Each believing that their “own God” will come to their rescue and guide their troops to the path of victory. But what the rest of us can see, is a trail of blood and destruction. Is there an end to this madness?


How does a right-wing-governed Israel fit into this picture? Israel and its atrocities in Palestine is often seen as “the” most potent fuel for radicalization and a major cause of the rise of extremism amongst Muslims around the world. But will the new US administration be able to talk the right-wing Israeli government into a peaceful settlement of a century-long conflict? A settlement with whom, when the Palestinian house is divided? Will such a solution come in time? What pressure can the US exercise over Israel? What is the impact on the internal US political scene?

Meanwhile, the needle of the radicameter in Pakistan as well as in many other places is pushing into the red. And the clock is ticking.

Swine Flu Outbreak in Mexico

There is a potentially serious outbreak of Swine Flu in Mexico which may be spreading to other countries. US Center of Disease Control CDC, has not yet warned travellers to Mexico to avoid this destination but CDC is closely monitoring the situation.

As many as 1,000 potential cases are suspected in Mexico and 81 deaths may have been related to the spread of the virus. Only 20 deaths are confirmed to have resulted from contracting the virus in Mexico where face masks are being used to try to avoid the spreading of the outbreak. Local authorities have empowered health officials with emergency powers to try to face the threat. Emeregency measures included shutting down schools and events with large gatherings. Eleven cases are suspected in the US. Other cases are suspected in France, Newzealand and other countries, mainly in travellers coming back from Mexico.

Wash your hands and avoid contact with potentially infected persons or animals.
